Zipline and KNUST Collaboration: In a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at advancing healthcare delivery in Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) partnered with Zipline, a leading autonomous drone delivery service, to host an award ceremony honoring pioneering research projects. The event, held at the Amonoo-Neizer Conference Hall, spotlighted innovative studies focused on enhancing healthcare through aerial logistics.
Zipline and KNUST Collaboration: Bridging Healthcare Gaps
Since 2019, Zipline has worked in tandem with the Government of Ghana to deploy unmanned drones for the swift and equitable distribution of vital medical supplies. With six distribution centers spread across Ghana, Zipline currently serves over 2,700 health facilities, benefiting approximately 17 million Ghanaians.
To bolster the evidence base supporting aerial logistics, Zipline and KNUST initiated the Zipline/KNUST Research Grant Award. This initiative fosters research led by interdisciplinary teams at KNUST, aiming to address healthcare challenges across various regions. Out of 51 student-led proposals, 12 were rigorously evaluated, leading to the selection of two projects for funding.
The awarded projects focus on enhancing sexual and reproductive health in the Western North and Ashanti regions, as well as tackling healthcare disparities in the Kwabre East District of Ashanti. Each winning team received substantial funding, mentorship, and support to publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals.
Prof. Peter Agyei-Baffour, Head of KNUST’s Department of Health Policy Management and Economics, emphasized the transformative impact of these projects, highlighting how interdisciplinary collaboration can ensure equitable access to medical supplies throughout Ghana.
Yvonne Aglah, Operations Lead of Zipline Ghana, reiterated Zipline’s commitment to leveraging technology to bridge healthcare gaps and enhance delivery to underserved communities. She expressed pride in supporting the next generation of innovators at KNUST through these research initiatives.
Florence Haruna, a member of the Zipline research team, emphasized the synergy between academia and industry in achieving groundbreaking outcomes. She outlined plans to expand the partnership, aiming to provide evidence-based solutions to global health supply chain challenges.
