In a move to guide and inspire the next generation of scientists, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) recently organized an enlightening Open Day for over 700 students from fourteen selected second-cycle schools in the Ashanti region. The College of Science at KNUST hosted this insightful event to ensure that upcoming university students grasp the relevance and scope of their chosen programs from the outset. According to Professor Osei Akoto, Dean of the Faculty of Physical and Computational Sciences, many students often struggle with program choices once they’re in university, which can hinder their academic progress. The Open Day provided an opportunity for SHS students to tour state-of-the-art laboratories, research facilities, and academic departments, gaining firsthand insights into various science programs offered at KNUST.
“The goal is to make students appreciate their choices early on,” Professor Akoto emphasized. “By exposing them to our diverse academic offerings and real-world applications, we hope to guide them towards programs that align with their interests and aspirations.”
The event, spearheaded by Chairman of the organizing committee, Prof. Reuben Yao Tamakloe, exceeded expectations by expanding from an initial plan for ten schools to fourteen. It aimed not only to inform but also to inspire students to proactively shape their academic futures. Participants expressed enthusiasm about the event’s impact on their decision-making processes.
Yasir Mohammed from Ejisuman SHS shared, “I’ve learned that science goes beyond medicine. Visiting the Department of Physics opened my eyes to many exciting courses. Seeing the achievements of KNUST students here, I’m now certain about my future course of study.”
Reflecting on his experience, Kwame Agyemang from Adu Gyamfi SHS added, “Exploring the optometry lab was fascinating and has sparked my interest.”
Written-Right Ohene, President of the College of Science Student Association, commended the initiative, noting its potential to positively influence students’ academic journeys. “The excitement and engagement we’ve seen today speak volumes. This event has truly empowered these students to make informed decisions about their educational paths,” he remarked.
